Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive procedure approved for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, particularly in individuals who have not found relief through traditional therapies like medication or psychotherapy. While the precise cause of depression remains unclear, many experts agree that it often involves an imbalance in neurotransmitters—chemical messengers that help brain cells communicate effectively.
During a TMS session, a small electromagnetic coil is gently placed near the patient’s forehead, directly against the scalp. This coil emits targeted magnetic pulses that stimulate specific areas of the brain known to have decreased activity in people suffering from depression. The goal of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is to rebalance neural activity and improve mood regulation.
Many patients begin to notice positive changes within four weeks, while friends and family often observe improvements within just 1–2 weeks of treatment. If you’re looking for “TMS Around Me”, our clinic proudly offers compassionate and effective care tailored to your needs. TMS therapy is offered at both our Stuart and Port Saint Lucie locations.

RCMHC conducts TMS Therapy with Neurostar Advanced Therapy. With over one million treatments performed, treatment is easy:
Transcranial magnetic stimulation operates using a targeted magnetic field, comparable to what’s used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While awake, the area of the patient’s brain (that typically shows low activity for depressed people), is stimulated using NeuroStar TMS Therapy.
NeuroStar uses transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to target key areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression. It is not ECT (electroconvulsive therapy).
The leading scientific theory suggests depression is caused by neurotransmitter imbalances.
During a session, a magnet like that in an MRI is used to stimulate nerve cells controlling mood.
Treatment features:
•In-office sessions
•No downtime
•Patient remains awake
•No memory or sleep side effects
•Covered by most insurance

Before treatment:
you’ll recline comfortably in the chair and a curved magnetic coil will be placed in contact with your head
During treatment:
You’ll hear clicking sounds, feel tapping sensations and be able to speak with your technician. You’ll remain awake and alert during treatment and can resume regular activity immediately after.
After treatment:
Results begin to emerge after the first few weeks of treatment and continue to improve in the weeks after treatment ends.
TMS therapy can cost anywhere from $6,000 – $12,000 depending on insurance coverage. However, most major insurance plans and Medicare cover TMS Therapy for patients who meet the criteria of having been diagnosed with MDD and having tried antidepressants without adequate relief. Our staff would love to take the time to help you understand if TMS treatment would be beneficial and covered for your case. Please contact us with any questions, we are here to help!
TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, a safe and effective non-drug, non-invasive solution for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). TMS uses precisely targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate key areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression.
NeuroStar TMS Therapy was the first TMS system to be cleared by the FDA in 2008. It’s covered by most major health insurance plans, including Medicare and TRICARE. NeuroStar TMS Therapy is indicated for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in adult patients who have failed to receive satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode.
NeuroStar uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain that are involved in mood regulation. While you recline comfortably in the treatment chair, a small curved device rests lightly on your head and delivers magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the targeted areas of the brain. NeuroStar TMS Therapy is not a drug or surgery and requires no anesthesia. You remain awake and alert during treatment and can resume your regular daily activities immediately after each treatment session.
During the initial TMS treatment, the TMS technician will determine your exact treatment parameters (including motor threshold, stimulation location) before beginning therapy. This may add between 30 – 60 minutes to your first session. After the initial treatment, you’ll recline in a chair for approximately 19-37 minutes, awake and alert during treatment. Each course of treatment is typically 5 treatments per week over 4-6 weeks, for 20-30 total treatments.
The most common side effect related to treatment is scalp discomfort or pain at or near the treatment site. The most serious side effect related to treatment is a seizure. Less than 1 in 10,000 patients treated with NeuroStar TMS Therapy has had a seizure during TMS Therapy. This rate is similar to that seen with antidepressants. If you experience seizures or fainting, contact your TMS treatment provider. Be sure to tell your TMS treatment provider about all medications you take.
Yes, TMS Therapy does not affect your mental alertness or concentration and you will be able to drive after each treatment session.
During a NeuroStar TMS treatment, you will feel a tapping sensation on your head and hear a clicking sound that occurs in a rapid sequence. You will be awake and alert throughout treatment, able to talk with your technician.
NeuroStar TMS Therapy is covered by most major insurance plans and Medicare. If you have questions about coverage, our staff would love to take the time to help you understand if TMS treatment would be covered for your case. Please contact us with any questions; we are here to help.
